I know this is a departure from the typical posts on intellectual property that I normally do, but I wanted to take some time out to urge our readers to join our firm in supporting The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at Florida Institute of TechnologyZWM is very proud to support many organizations.  Please take a minute to check out our community page to find out more information about the various organizations that we proudly support.

This year, I am honored to be the chairman of the committee planning the annual fundraiser for The Scott Center – The Evening of Hope IV. The event will be held on April 21, 2012 at the home of one of the Trustees of Florida Tech, Joe Flammio.  I really want to thank Mr. Flammio for his generosity to The Scott Center.  Sponsorships are still available, and can be purchased here.

As a special treat this year, The Kempf family, owners of Kempf’s Jewelers in Indialantic have again donated a Rolex watch to be raffled off  for the benefit of The Scott Center.  Tickets are only $25 a piece and can be purchased here.  The drawing for the Rolex watch will be held at Kempf’s Jewers on April 28.

The Scott Center for Autism Treatment has a three pronged mission – Service, Training & Research.  The three pronged approach of The Scott Center provides families and persons suffering with Autism with the treatment that they need,  training for future therapists, and research of new Autism treatments.  I am lucky enough to live in this wonderful community that provides such great resources to families that deal with Autism.  I thank all the members of our committee, and I look forward to a wonderful event.  Please join me in supporting the fight against Autism.

2011 was a great year for us at Zies Widerman & Malek, both from a business perspective and a community/family perspective.  I’ll keep the business side short.  The biggest thing that happened for us is moving into our new space in Melbourne, Florida.  The firm outgrew the old office (four offices) and the new space (seventeen offices) more suits our expansion needs.  The intellectual property team of Mark Malek, Philip Zies, Scott Nyman, Mark Warzecha, Gene Quinn (founder of IPWatchdog) and Danielle Roy filed a record number of patent, trademark and copyright applications on behalf of our clients.  Several articles were posted to TacticalIP.  The assumption must be that the articles are well written and contained great information because traffic to TacticalIP has skyrocketed (12,553 visits from September 1 – December 30).  Aaron Thalwitzer, Daniel Davidson and Rene Dial have been instrumental in the success of TacticalIP, and they are thanked.

From a community perspective, the firm was extremely active in supporting many wonderful causes throughout the year.  Without a doubt, the most fun we had as a firm was when we participated in Brevard County’s Corporate Dodgeball Challenge as the Lethal Litigators.  Unfortunately, we did not bring home the win, but with some additional training, we will take down many of the other teams, including our arch-dodgeball-nemesis, Craig Technologies, in 2012.  The firm also supported many charities.  Please take a look at our community page for more information on some of the groups that the firm continues to support.  We encourage all of you join us in supporting these great causes, either through volunteer efforts or financial donations.  Of note this past year, the firm sponsored and attended events for The Scott Center for Autism Treatment, Junior Achievement of the Space Coast, March of Dimes, Brevard Symphony Orchestra, Epilepsy Association, and the Space Coast Early Intervention Center.

On the personal/family side, the firm, and many individuals within the firm, enjoyed much prosperity.  We all loved attending Rene Dial’s wedding in early October, and Mark Warzecha’s wedding just a couple of weeks after that.  We wish both of you all the best as you endeavor on the great adventure!  We were also glad to hold our first annual Zies Widerman and Malek family picnic.  It was a bit hot, but a great time for all of us to get together with our families.  We also enjoyed a wonderful holiday party at Silvestro’s in Cocoa Beach this year.  The firm welcomed Danielle Roy as a Registered Patent Agent, and congratulate Mark Warzecha (already an attorney registered in New York and Indiana) on passing the Florida Bar.

The above is just a little bit of the success that the firm experienced over the past year, and we look forward to 2012!  Thanks to all that made this happen.

I know this is completely off topic, but from time to time, we like to invite our readers and clients to join us in supporting our community.  The attorneys and staff of Zies Widerman & Malek are dedicated to our community and take every opportunity that we can to support it.  Many of you who know me know that I am a family man.  I am married to a wonderful woman, Aileen, and we have two fantastic boys – Andrew (5) and Jacob (3).  Our son, Andrew, was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome about two years ago.  We were fortunate enough to get an early diagnosis.

Andrew and Jacob - My Pride and Joy

We are even more fortunate to have many resources available to us to provide Andrew with the treatment he needs.  One of those resources is the Scott Center for Autism Treatment at Florida Institute of Technology. The Scott Center opened in October 2009. It provides treatment, education and training for persons with autism spectrum disorders and their families from Brevard, Indian River, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties. The center implements research-based practices, partners with schools and families and collaborates with other professionals in this new facility.

Such wonderful treatments come with a cost.  As such, the Scott Center will be holding their annual fundraiser, An Evening of Hope III, on April 8, 2011.  I serve on the committee for the Evening of Hope event, and I am honored to serve on the advisory committee for the Center.  I thank my firm and, especially, my partners, Philip Zies and Scott Widerman, for their support of this program and for Autism Research.

David and Gale Kempf

As part of the event, my dear friends at Kempf’s Jewelers have donated a Rolex Submariner watch (valued at over $6,000) to be raffled.  Tickets for the raffle are only $25 each, and can be purchased here.  Please consider buying some tickets.  The number of tickets being sold is limited, and the raffle proceeds will greatly impact the lives of so many.  I really want to emphasize the generosity of the Kempf family in donating this beautiful timepiece.  This is not the first time that the Kempf’s have stepped up for our community, and I thank them on behalf of my family.

I also thank you, our readers, for supporting this cause.  Please take a minute to review our community page and consider joining us in supporting some other wonderful organizations that impact the lives of so many.
